Local priest on pilgrimage to save steeples

Father David Sánchez, pastor of St. Joseph Church in Butchertown, is pictured on July 22, day 12 of his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The town of Cahors, France, lies about 3 km in the distance and he walked part of the way downhill backward to relieve pain in his left ankle and right knee. His 937-mile pilgrimage aims to raise money to repair the steeples and other details at his historic parish. About $32,000 has been raised since his pilgrimage was publicized in June. Overall, the parish has raised more than one third of its $2.7 million goal. Follow his progress at wherespadre.org. (Photo from Father Sánchez’s Instagram)
