Fr. Clarence Howard dies at age 80

Father Clarence J. Howard, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Louisville, died Sept. 10. He was 80 years old and had been a priest for 54 years.

Father Howard was a native of Howardstown, Ky., where he began his life of faith at St. Ann Church. He attended St. Mary’s College in St. Mary, Ky., and

St. Meinrad Seminary in St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained in 1961 by Archbishop John A. Floersh.

In his ministry, Father Howard served as pastor of St. Catherine Church in New Haven, Ky., where he also attended grade school; St. Vincent de Paul Church in New Hope, Ky.; the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Ky.; and St. Bernard Church in Clementsville, Ky.

Father Howard also served as the associate pastor at St. Raphael Church and the former St. Benedict Church (now St. Martin de Porres Church).

He also served on the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Priests’ Council and College of Consultors.

He is survived by his sisters LaNell Caspar of Lexington, Ky., and Rosita Raque of Louisville, brother Lawrence Howard, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Sept. 14 at St. Bernadette Church, 6500 Saint Bernadette Avenue, in Prospect, Ky. Visitation will be at St. Bernadette prior to the funeral and will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will follow the Mass at 3:30 p.m. in New Haven at the St. Catherine Church Cemetery.
