40 Days for Life founder to speak at Sept. event

The next 40 Days for Life campaign will take place Sept. 23 through Nov. 1. The campaign — which calls for peaceful prayer vigils, fasting and “grassroots education outreach” — takes place twice a year, during Lent and again during the fall.

Shawn Carney, the national campaign director of 40 Days for Life, will speak at the kick-off event scheduled for noon Sept. 25 outside EMW Women’s Surgical Center, 138 W. Market St. Carney led the first 40 Days for Life campaign outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan-College Station, Texas, in 2004, according to a press release. Carney went on to expand the campaign into a national and international movement that has spread to 501 cities in 50 U.S. states and 19 countries.

“People in Louisville have made extraordinary sacrifices to expose the abortion industry and to protect pre-born children and their mothers from abortion,” said Carney in a statement. “I’m honored to be able to join these folks in prayer.”

“We are tremendously pleased that Shawn will be here to support our 40 Days for Life effort,” said a statement from Laura Grijalba, spokesperson for the Louisville campaign. “He’s an energetic, enthusiastic speaker and we know he will be an inspiration.”

Louisville is one of 360 communities around the world taking part in 40 Days for Life campaign Sept. 23 through Nov. 1. For more information or to sign up for a prayer shift during the campaign, visit www.40daysforlife.com/louisville or call Laura Grijalba at 475-5403.
