Deacon John L. Shoulta, formerly of Shelbyville, Ky., dies at age 78

Deacon John L. Shoulta, 78, of Paducah, Ky., formerly of Shelbyville, Ky., died on Jan. 26 at Cobden Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Cobden, Ill.

Deacon Shoulta was ordained a deacon in 1999. He served at the Church of the Annunciation in Shelbyville and at St. John Chrysostom Church in Eminence, Ky. He was a retired vice president of sales with Eminence Speaker Co., a member of the Knights of Columbus and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Deacon Shoulta is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joanne; four daughters, Carol Baker and Teresa Bennett of Albuquerque, N.M.; Ellen Anderson of Paducah; and Lisa Nix of Shelbyville; six sons, Steven of Paducah; Edward of Norcross, Ga.; Jerome of Warner Robins, Ga.; Jeffrey of Lenexa, Kan.; Brian of Greenwood, Ind.; and Eric of Alice Springs, Australia;  15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Theresa Gaydos of Cleveland, Ohio; Sister of Mercy Louise Shoulta of Nashville, Tenn.; and Susan Hayden of Paducah; two brothers, Michael of Paducah; and David of Dickson, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 31 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Paducah with burial in St. John Cemetery.
