Derby art awards
Catholic school students won several top awards in the Kentucky Derby Museum’s “Horsing Around with Art” contest. The following students received awards during a ceremony, which was held Feb. 19.
Mercy Academy’s Danielle Belvoix won the Thoroughbred Award. Mercy’s Brianna Baker won the Backside Award. Patrick Schaefer, a student at St. Agnes School, won the 3D/Sculpture Award.
In the high school division, Jenny Anderson of Assumption High School took first place and Brianna Baker placed second. Honorable mentions were awarded to Danielle Belvoix, Emma Lally and Victoria Browning, all of Assumption.
In the middle school division, Trey Sweeney of St. Bernard School placed second and Alli Revers, also of St. Bernard, placed third. Honorable mention awards were presented to Tim Willis of St. Francis of Assisi School, Aubrey Draper of St. Margaret Mary School, and Bailey Recktenwald and Jake Zickel of St. Bernard.
Honorable mentions also were awarded to Catholic school students in the primary division to Shelby Shekell of St. Margaret Mary and Daniel Baldwin of St. Francis of Assisi and in the intermediate division to Cora Bidwell of St. Agnes.
Female leader
Assumption High School junior Julia Mikulec was selected to be an ANNpower Fellow in a leadership forum that will be held in Washington, D.C. April 1-4. The national program sponsored by Ann Taylor selects 50 female juniors and seniors each year to attend.
Academic squad
Seven Assumption High School seniors have been selected for the national field hockey academic squad, known as the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association High School National Academic Squad. The students are Emily Allen, Kelsey Gordon, Erin Keifer, Audra Kinney, Kaitlin LaBarbera, Hailey Netherton and Mallory Phillips. Selection for the squad is based on a student’s grade point average.
Athletic signing
DeSales High School senior James Jarvis signed a national letter of intent Feb. 6 to play football for Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Young scholar
Lola Fakunle, a student at Sacred Heart Academy, was recognized by the National Achievement Scholarship Program as an outstanding participant. She scored in the top three percent of more than 160,000 black students who took the qualifying test.
New playwrights
A dozen Mercy Academy students were recognized for their work in the New Voices Young Playwrights Contest sponsored by Actor’s Theatre. Student Clare Wolz was among the contest winners and her play, “Paper or Plastic,” will be produced at Actor’s Theatre, 316 W. Main St., on April 22 and 23. Tickets are free.
Other students who received top recognition include Hannah Costelle, who received an honorable mention, and finalists Caroline Keck and Sarah Wilson.
Xaverian retreat
Seven students from St. Xavier High School have been selected to attend the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools Student Retreat March 3 to 7 in Connecticut. Joe Dawson, Ryan Gahafer, Patrick George, Matthew Hamilton, Devin Kelly, Joseph Mann and Ross Vessels will learn about the mission and ministry of the Xaverian Brothers.
Each of the 13 schools sponsored by the Xaverians will be represented.
Theater
- Mercy Academy, 5801 Fegenbush Lane, will present “Steel Magnolias” Feb. 28 to March 3. The school will present a dinner theater on March 2 with catering by J. Gumbos restaurant. Tickets to that performance are $18 each or $100 for a table of 6. Discounts are available for children 10 and under. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 7:30 p.m.Other performances are set for today, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m., March 1 at 8 p.m. and March 3, a “senior Sunday” performance, at 3 p.m. Tickets for these shows are $2 for students and $7 for adults in advance or $5 for students and $10 for adults at the door.
- Presentation Academy’s Top Hat Theatre will present “As it is in Heaven” on March 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. each night in the school’s Arts & Athletic Center, 900 S. Fourth St. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. They may be purchased at the door or by calling Marsha Bruder at 583-5935, ext. 111.
