Service group honored
The St. Xavier High School chapter of the St. Joseph of Arimathea Society will be honored with the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award by the Greater Louisville Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The award was presented at the chapter’s annual National Philanthropy Day Luncheon on Nov. 16 at the Galt House Hotel & Suites.
Members of the St. Joseph of Arimathea Society, along with St. Xavier High alumni and staff, act as pall bearers and provide a Christian burial service for deceased individuals in Jefferson County who do not have the funds to be buried in a private cemetery, a news release from the school noted.
Eagle Scouts
- Noah Bauer, a St. Xavier High School senior, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Bauer is a member of Troop 380, sponsored by St. Patrick Church.For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Bauer designed and constructed entrance and exit archways for the sensory garden at the Louisville Nature Center.
- Daniel Spitza, a senior at St. Xavier High School, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Spitza is a member of Troop 4, sponsored by St. Agnes Church. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Spitza planted native Kentucky shrubs and constructed several trellis structures at the Louisville Nature Center.
Service project
Students at Assumption High School took part in the school’s sixth annual “Canstrunction” event. For two weeks the students collected canned goods and created a display out of the cans centered on different themes. Following the event, all of the collected canned goods were donated to the Dare to Care food bank.
All-state teams
Several students from area Catholic high schools have been named to the Region 6 All-region and the West All-state teams for Kentucky girls high school soccer.
Christen McAllister and Morgan Riggs of Assumption High School and Kayla Richardson of Mercy Academy were named to the First Team All-state. Kaitlyn Golab of Mercy and Caroline Wistrom of Sacred Heart Academy were named to the Second Team All-state. Kaitlyn Golab, Kayla Richardson and Lauren Lee of Mercy and Sydney Morabito of Holy Cross High School were named to the First Team All-region team. Victoria Dircksen, Grace Fierle and Cayla Metzmeier of Mercy and Morgan Wimberg of Holy Cross were named to the Second Team All-region team.
Churchill scholars
- Four Trinity High School seniors have been named 2012 Churchill Downs Winner’s Circle Governor’s Scholars. Losson Brotzge, Austin Gocke, Seth Piatt and Blake Strozdas will be honored at a luncheon ceremony Nov. 16 at Churchill Downs.
- Three St. Xavier High School student have also been selected as 2012 Churchill Downs Winner’s Circle Governor’s Scholars. Harrison Kirby, Jacob Madalon and John Nolan will also be honored at the Nov. 16 ceremony.
Theater
- Four of the cast members performing in StageOne Family Theatre’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts are from area Catholic schools.
Lucas Karen, a fourth-grader at St. Agnes School, is playing the role of Charlie Bradley. Elise Martino, a senior at Sacred Heart Academy, is playing the role of Imogen Herdman in the play. Anna Medley, a St. Albert School eighth-grader, is in the church’s Angel Choir. And, Eliza Moorman, a fifth-grader at St. Margaret Mary School, will play Gladys Herdman. - Sacred Heart School for the Arts will present “Wind in the Willows” Nov. 29 at 10 a.m., Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. All shows will be in the Ursuline Arts Center, building 5 on the Ursuline Campus, 3105 Lexington Road. Tickets for the Nov. 29 performance are $4. Tickets for the Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 performances are $5 for students and senior citizens and $8 for adults and can be purchased online www.showtix4u.com.
- St. Margaret Mary School’s musical theater program will present “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” Nov. 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. in the Parish Activity Center, 7813 Shelbyville Road. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors and can be purchased by calling the school at 426-2635. They can also be purchased at the door for $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
