Ursuline Sister Ellen Friel dies at 89

Ursuline Sister of Louisville (Mary Paul) Ellen Friel died July 29 at Mercy Sacred Heart. She was 89.

Sister Friel, born in Pittsburgh, Penn., entered the Ursuline Sisters of Pittsburgh in 1949, which merged with the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1958.

She served in education and technical support in institutions in Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and West Virginia. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at Our Lady of Lourdes School.

Sister Friel was a resident of the Ursuline Sisters’ former Marian Home before moving to Mercy Sacred Heart in 2010, when Marian Home closed.

She is survived by her brother John Friel Sr., sister Mary Enright, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road, on July 31 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Penn.
