Students learn self defense and advocacy

By Kylie Wulf, Special to The Record

Assumption High School held a “Day of Advocacy” for sophomores Feb. 27 on the school’s campus. During the event, more than 250 students took part in a self-defense training session and heard from attorney Ingrid Geiser, a 1984 graduate of Assumption, on interpersonal violence prevention, dating violence and sexual assault.

The students also attended four sessions on the basics of being an advocate.

The “Day of Advocacy” was part of Assumption’s 11th annual Mission Week that took place Feb. 26 through March 1. During Mission Week, close to 1,000 students, faculty and staff members gave nearly 6,000 hours of service locally and abroad.

Other activities for Mission Week included job shadow days, where students had the opportunity to explore different careers, college visits, and creative expression through plays produced by the school’s BLOOM Theatre Project.
