St. Mary Academy students become refugees for a day

stmaryacademy-10-29-15-wSeventh-grade students, staff and parent volunteers at St. Mary Academy in Prospect, Ky., participated in a refugee camp simulation presented by staff from Catholic Charities of Louisville on Oct. 22.

The purpose of the camp simulation, according to a news release from the school, is to help students better understand the challenges faced by millions of refugees worldwide.

During the refugee camp simulation, students learned of the challenges associated with those people seeking refuge. Participants engaged in “an experiential process that also fosters a sense of humility, grace-filled charity and solidarity,” the news release said.

Catholic Charities has offered the refugee camp program since 2008. The guidebook, “Seeking Refugee: Forced to Flee,” a 40-page curriculum guide developed by Catholic Charities of Louisville staff and local educators, was distributed nationwide in 2013 to other Catholic Charities agencies.
