St. Barnabas and St. Pius X will host closing Masses

The parish communities of St. Barnabas Church, 3042 Hikes Lane, and St. Pius X Church, 3521 Goldsmith Lane, will host closing Masses on Nov. 21 and 22.

The two parishes will merge and officially become St. John Paul II Church on Nov. 29, according to a decree from the Archdiocese of Louisville. Father Bill Burks, currently pastor of both parishes, will serve as pastor of the new parish.

St. Pius X, which opened in the Bon Air neighborhood in 1956, will host a closing liturgy Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. Father Burks, “along with other founding members, will recognize the special places within the church building that hold precious memories,” according to an announcement from the parish. A catered buffet dinner, live music by “Waste Band” and a display of parish photos will follow the Mass in the Community Center.

Reservations can be made at www.piusx.com (hover over “Home” and a “Closing Ceremony” link will appear) and are due no later than Nov. 8. Reservations may also be made by mailing the number of guests to Closing Ceremony Committee, c/o St. Pius X Church, 3521 Goldsmith Lane, Louisville, Ky., 40220-2313.

St. Barnabas, which was established in 1953 in Hikes Point, will hold a closing Mass celebrated by Father Burks on Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. Following the liturgy, there will be a luncheon.

All former and current parishioners, students, school staff and friends of the parishes are welcome to attend the celebrations.
