Sister of Charity of Nazareth Brigid Clifford, an educator, dies at 78

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Brigid Clifford, formerly Sister Sarah Clifford, died at University of Louisville Hospital Sept. 6. She was 78 and had been an SCN for 51 years.

Sister Clifford, a native of Chillicothe, Ohio, served as an elementary school teacher in Bardstown, Ky., and Louisville. She also served as director of admissions and as counselor and dean of student affairs at Spalding College, now Spalding University.

Sister Clifford served as provincial secretary at Catherine Spalding Center. She also served in community service in Maria Hall at Nazareth Home in Louisville.

From 1993 to 1998 Sister Clifford served as vice president and treasurer of the SCN congregation. From 1998 to 2009 she served in community service in the Motherhouse Archival Center. In her later years, Sister Clifford served in the apostolate of prayer.

She is survived by her sister Mary Clifford Karalexis of Weymouth, Mass., her sister-in-law Francine Fitzgerald Clifford of Lancaster, Ohio, her SCN companion Sister Carol Rogers, nieces and nephews and members of her religious community.

Visitation will be Sept. 9 after 4 p.m. in St. Vincent Church in Nazareth, Ky., followed by a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Sept. 10 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Vincent Church, followed by burial in Nazareth Cemetery.
