Sister of Charity Maria Sampson, an educator, dies

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Maria Sampson, 88, died at Nazareth Home June 11. She had been an SCN for 65 years.

Sister Sampson, a native of Memphis, Tenn., served in educational ministries in the Dioceses of Covington, Owensboro and Memphis. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Agnes School and Bethlehem Academy in Bardstown, Ky.

She earned her bachelor’s in music at Nazareth College, a master’s in music from Catholic University of America and a master’s in religious education from Loyola University, Chicago. For a number of years, Sister Sampson taught music and religion. She also ministered with the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults for 25 years.

She is survived by a brother, Louis Anthony Sampson, her nieces and members of her religious community.

Visitation will be held June 13 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Nazareth Home, 2000 Newburg Rd. A prayer service will be held June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth, Ky. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. June 14 at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth, Ky., followed by burial in Nazareth Cemetery.
