Sister Mary Carolyn Abell dies at 77

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Mary Carolyn Abell, formerly Sister Maria Goretti Abell, died at Nazareth Home on Oct. 20. She was 77 and had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 59 years.

Sister Abell, a native of native of Louisville, served as a music therapist at Our Lady of Peace Hospital and as director of liturgical ministry at St. Edward and St. Agnes churches. She also served part time as a cantor and liturgist at other parishes.

In addition, Sister Abell served as an educator at elementary schools in Tennessee and Massachusetts for 16 years. She had served in the Apostolate of Prayer at Nazareth Home since 2005.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret A. Johanneman of Louisville; two brothers, Nicholas Abell of Shepherdsville, Ky., and Donald Abell of Louisville; and her religious community.

Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 25 at Nazareth Home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the home. Burial will follow in Nazareth Cemetery in Nazareth, Ky., on the grounds of the motherhouse, at 2:30 p.m.
