Sister Gleason, former Loretto High principal, dies

Sister of Loretto M. Ann Francis Gleason, a former principal of Loretto High School, died Nov. 29 at the Loretto Motherhouse Infirmary in Nerinx, Ky. She was 93 and in her 71st year as a Sister of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross.

Sister Gleason, a native of Berkley, Cal., made her final vows in 1948.

She served at high schools in Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky and California from 1945 to 1999, teaching French and serving in administrative positions. She served as dean of women at Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colo., in the 1950s.

In the Archdiocese of Louisville, Sister Gleason taught at Loretto High School beginning in 1961 and served as principal of the now-closed school from 1962 until 1969.

She also served as a team coordinator of the Loretto Denver Center in Littleton, Colo., from 1999 to 2002, when she retired to the Loretto Motherhouse. She moved to the infirmary in 2004 and served as the infirmary bursar until earlier this year.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Seven Dolors on the grounds of the Loretto Motherhouse.

It will be preceded by a wake on Dec. 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Motherhouse. Following the memorial Mass, Sister Gleason’s ashes will be buried at the Loretto Motherhouse Cemetery.
