Mercy to launch teacher in student-made craft

Mercy-Academy-Logo-wA group of Mercy Academy students built a flying craft over the summer which they will enter into a Red Bull Flugtag competition Aug. 27 at Waterfront Park.

The competition challenges teams to build and pilot home-made flying crafts that are launched from a 30-foot-high flight deck, according to redbullflugtag.com.

Steve Hammer, Mercy’s fine arts and engineering teacher, has led construction and will pilot it at the event, according to a press release from Mercy. The students are involved in Mercy’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program. Earlier this year, Mercy became the first all-girls school in the nation to receive STEM certification.

Teams will be judged on flight distance, creativity of the craft and showmanship, said the release.
