Dominican Sister Elaine Marie Carey, 94, dies

Dominican Sister of Peace Elaine Marie Carey, 94, died Oct. 26 at Sansbury Care Center in Springfield, Ky. She was a Dominican Sister for 73 years.

Sister Carey, a native of Memphis, Tenn., ministered as an educator at the old Sts. Simon and Jude School and at St. Rose School in Springfield, Ky., and in schools in Nebraska, Arkansas, Indiana and Illinois.

She later served in religious education at Mother of Good Counsel Church and at parishes in Illinois and Nebraska.

In 1983, Sister Carey served as a pastoral care associate and chaplain at Our Lady of Peace Hospital. In 1992, she worked at the Sansbury Care Center in the social service department and later volunteered in the pastoral ministry department. In 1998, she worked in the New Dominican Life Office and the Office of Ministry Support in Louisville. In 2003, Sister Carey moved to the St. Catharine Motherhouse, where she provided community support.

In 2005, Sister Carey moved to Sansbury Care Center, where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Audrey Carey, and nieces and nephews.

The visitation begins at 3 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 2 at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
