Deacon class of 1993 celebrates 25th anniversary

The Archdiocese of Louisville diaconate class of 1993 is marking its 25th anniversary of ordination this year.

These men were ordained Aug. 28, 1993, by Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly at St. Margaret Mary Church.

The deacons — and their wives — marking anniversaries are:

Deacon James H. Abell retired in 2010. He is married to Mary Jo Abell.

Deacon Martin J. Brown retired in 2016.

Deacon Robert Samuel Filiatreau serves at St. Thomas Church in Bardstown, Ky. He is married to JoAnn Filiatreau.

Deacon Kenneth J. Mitchell serves at St. Rita and St. Luke churches. He is married to Janice Mitchell.

Deacon Sylvester Nitzken serves at St. Stephen Martyr Church. He is married to Joan Nitzken.

Deacon Charles Wayne Thieneman serves at St. Lawrence Church. He is married to Audrey Thieneman.

Deacon Richard J. Walsh serves at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Ky. He is married to Judith Walsh.

The permanent diaconate was established in the Archdiocese of Louisville in 1976. An information session for those interested in the diaconate will be offered Sept. 16 at St. Aloysius Church in Pewee Valley, Ky., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
