Bellarmine to honor distinguished alumni

Bellarmine University will honor nine individuals and one religious organization at its 57th annual Alumni Association Awards dinner Feb. 15.

The honorees have “distinguished themselves through professional accomplishments, community service and demonstration of attitudes consistent with Bellarmine’s values, according to a press release from the university.

The honorees include:

Monsignor Horrigan Distinguished Service Award — Sister Janet Marie Peterworth, president of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, will accept the award on behalf of her congregation. Bellarmine is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the merger between Bellarmine and Ursuline College during the 2018-2019 school year.

Other distinguished graduates who will be honored are:

Ursuline Sister of Louisville Regina Bevelacqua, a graduate of 1964 and Mary Jo Payne, graduate of the class 1972, are co-founders of St. Mary’s Center. St. Mary’s is a non-profit organization which provides adult day-training, teen after-school activities and athletic activities for intellectually disabled individuals.

Dr. John Roberts, a 1972 graduate, is vice dean of graduate medical education at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He chairs the Kentucky Medical Association’s committee that accredits continuing medical education programs
throughout the state.

Colonel Corey Simmons, a graduate of the class of 1998, is a United States Air Force commander. He has been a national defense fellow at the Harvard John F. Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He served as military assistant to the undersecretary of the Air Force in Washington, D.C.

Elizabeth Tromans, a 2004 graduate,  is a technical advisor for International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian aid organization. Tromans previously worked with Catholic Relief Serices. She has led relief efforts in major disasters such as the 2013 Philippines typhoon and the 2015 Nepal earthquake.

The awards dinner will take place at 7 p.m. at the Amelia Brown Frazier Convocation Hall on the university’s campus. Tickets are $60. To register or purchase a table call 272-8333 or visit www.alumni.bellarmine.edu.
