Construction of pastoral center on Poplar Level Road begins

Construction for the new Archdiocesan Pastoral Center is now underway on Poplar Level Road.

The pastoral center will be located in the former school and preschool buildings on the campus of Holy Family Church. It will replace the current Chancery on College Street in downtown Louisville as the headquarters of the archdiocese.

The former preschool building — which was originally the Holy Family Convent — was razed in February. Construction on the center is expected to be completed in 12 to 14 months.

So far, the bulk of the work has centered around asbestos abatement, said Dr. Brian Reynolds, chancellor and chief administrative officer of the Archdiocese of Louisville, in a phone interview last week.

The building will be fitted with a number of energy efficient upgrades. Solar panels will be installed on a portion of the roof, and another section of the building will feature a green roof.

In addition, more trees will be planted on the campus.

“The intent is to put islands in the parking lot with trees to increase the tree canopy and to contribute to the attractiveness of the property,” Reynolds said, noting that a rendering of the project is scheduled to be completed in the next month.

Holy Family Church, the Saffin Center and the rectory will remain as parish property.

Along with the move to the new pastoral center will be a reorganization of the current Office of Lifelong Formation and Education (OLFE). That office currently includes the superintendent’s and other Catholic school offices, youth and young adult ministry and the formation offices. Beginning in 2017, the current OLFE structure will no longer be used. The three offices will operate under their own names, Reynolds said.

“They have been seen as individual agencies in lot of ways already,” Reynolds said.

Offices that will be located at the new pastoral center are:

The Archbishop’s Office, including the offices of the chancellor and vicar general; the Archdiocesan Communications Office, in part; the Office of Evangelization; the Finance Office; the Office of Mission Advancement; the Office of Personnel & Planning; the Office of Priest Personnel; the Catholic Schools Office; the Metropolitan Tribunal; and the Vocation Office.

Offices to be located at the Maloney Center are:

The Diaconate Office; the Office of Facility Management; the Office of Family Ministries; the Office of Formation; the Office of Multicultural Ministries; the Archdiocesan Communications Office — The Record; the Office of Worship; the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministries; and Catholic Mutual.

Catholic Charities of Louisville, Catholic Cemeteries and the Catholic Enrichment Center will continue to operate in their current locations.
