Students and families involved with Community Catholic Center (CCC) participated in the city-wide Operation Brightside Clean-Up April 13, picking up trash in the Portland neighborhood.

The students — who receive financial assistance to attend Catholic schools and tutoring through CCC — also learned about planting small gardens during the event.

“It was wonderful seeing everyone working together and having a good time doing it,” said Justin Shults, a social worker who coordinates service projects for CCC families.

Volunteer Tim Thornburg helped the students create their own personal gardens within buckets. The “bucket garden” project was funded by a donation from Earth First. The students planted lettuce, carrots, onions and radishes. In a few weeks, they plan to plant beans.

CCC is a non-profit organization that assists families living in Portland and other West End neighborhoods by providing tuition assistance to area Catholic schools, building community in the area working to create a positive environment for the children.
