The following is a listing of Catholic community events in central Kentucky.

SERVICES & DEVOTIONS

In observance of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. Fifth St., will hold a trinity of prayer services in thanksgiving and intercession for the country.
The first will be the praying of The Patriotic Rosary following the noon Mass on May 17, the United States National Day of Prayer.

St. Luke Church, 4211 Jim Hawkins Dr., will host a display of the work of St. Carlo Acutis, the first millennial saint, on May 16 after the 4 p.m. Mass and May 17 after the 10 a.m. Mass. For more information, contact stlukelouisville@gmail.com

A Special Disciples of Jesus Mass will be celebrated on May 17 at 3 p.m at St. Margaret Mary Church, 7813 Shelbyville Road. Special-needs families and friends are invited to attend the shortened Mass intended for children. A light reception will follow. St. Patrick Church, 1000 N. Beckley Station Road, will host a “Rosary for Peace” prayer night on May 21 at 7 p.m. It is open to all.

Catholic Charismatic Renewal will host a praise and worship evening on May 28 at St. Margaret Mary Parish, 7813 Shelbyville Rd. Beginning with praise and worship at 6:15 p.m. with Dr. Holly Smith, followed by the Mass of the Holy Spirit at 7:00 p.m., celebrated by Father Bill Hammer. RETREATS

Mark Meade will lead a retreat called “Finding and Losing Ourselves in Art with Thomas Merton” at the Nazareth Retreat Center on the campus of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Nazareth, Ky., May 29-31.
Meade is the assistant director of the Thomas Merton Center in Louisville and is a past president of the International Thomas Merton Society.

“Heart on Fire,” a day-long women’s workshop, will be offered on May 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDT at the St. Meinrad Guest House and Retreat Center. The retreat will be led by Jane Feliz Rush, a writer and former campus minister. The fee for the workshop is $75 per person, and it includes lunch. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Catholic Charities of Louisville needs volunteers to help support an array of programs. Childcare volunteers for the Mama Matters Program are needed from May 27 to July 31. Two adults and two teenage youth (14 years or older) are needed each shift at the agency’s main office, 435 E. Broadway.

ALUMNI EVENTS

Holy Rosary Academy’s class of 1976 will hold a 50-year reunion on July 18 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Rooster’s Restaurant, 5338 Bardstown Road. Interested alumnae who have not been contacted are asked to reach out to Barbara Heeb Smith at smith2660@bellsouth.net.

HERE AND THERE

A Walking Tour of St. Louis Cemetery, 1167 Barret Avenue, will be presented on May 31 and will be repeated on June 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. The tour guides will be Steve Wiser, president of the Louisville Historical League, and Tim Tomes, archivist for the Archdiocese of Louisville. 
The tours are free, but donations to the William and Margaret Keely Headstone Fund are appreciated.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Parents of Addicted Loved Ones (PAL) meets weekly on Sundays from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at St. John Paul II Church, 3525 Goldsmith Lane.

EDUCATION & ENRICHMENT

The Adult Christian Enrichment Program of St. Bernadette Church is offering a series of classes via Zoom. The programs will be offered on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The next dates and topics, to be presented by Deacon Jim Shields, are:

  • May 21 and 22 Sirach: A Traditional Approach to Wisdom
  • May 28 and 29 Sirach: On the Cultivation of Virtue

A Bible study led by Father Joe Rankin is held on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at St. Rita Church, 8709 Preston Highway. On May 19, the topic is “These People Have Turned the World Upside Down!” on Pentecost and the bold, world‑changing courage of Spirit‑filled disciples.

The death penalty in Kentucky is the subject of a program to be presented on May 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Dominican Sisters of Peace St. Catharine Hall in St. Catharine, Ky. The presentation will be given by Russell Allen, executive director of the Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. To register or for more information, call 859-336-9303.
