Archbishop ‘surprised’ by the pope’s resignation

Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, who held a press conference today at the Chancery, said he was surprised by the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, whom he regards with “great love and great esteem.”

The archbishop said the Holy Father’s resignation is a “morally strong decision”  and a sign of his humility.
