More than 500 students, chaperones and adults from the Archdiocese of Louisville plan to attend the national March for Life Jan. 22 in Washington, D.C., this year.

The annual march, which draws hundreds of thousands of participants, marks the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision in the case of Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion-on-demand in the United States.

Prior to the march, pilgrims are invited to attend several events, including a vigil Mass on Jan. 21 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

They are also invited to attend a Pro-life Expo with more than 60 pro-life ministries, a talk presented by a Holocaust survivor at the National Holocaust Museum, a Congressional breakfast and a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz.

Those interested in attending the March for Life in the nation’s capitol, may call Ed Harpring, coordinator of pro-life ministries for the Archdiocese of Louisville, at 471-2154.

Closer to home, the archdiocese is sponsoring a local Walk for Life in downtown Louisville on Jan. 22. The 1.5-mile prayer walk will begin promptly at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. Fifth St. It will end between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Youth groups, families, school groups and individuals are welcome to participate. A gathering prior to the walk will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Cathedral’s undercroft.
For more information about the local walk, email Karl Dolson at kdolson@archlou.org or Viv Cornell at vcornell@archlou.org or call 448-8581.

The anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision also will be commemorated at the Knights of Columbus annual Memorial Mass for Life, which will be celebrated on Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. by Archbishop Kurtz. The liturgy will be celebrated at St. Martin of Tours Church, 639 S. Shelby St.

Parishes and organizations are encouraged to register representatives to accept “roses for life” during the liturgy on behalf of their parishes or groups. The roses are given to representatives to demonstrate their commitment to the pro-life cause.
