Mercy Academy will host a screening of “Girl Rising” tonight, June 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Spalding Egan Leadership Center, 901 S. Fourth Street.
This film tells the stories of nine girls, each from a different country and their quest to attend school.
“In light of the recent highly publicized events in Nigeria, this event will bring the community together to raise global visibility about the importance of educating girls. The goal is to share the story of the nearly 300 missing Nigerian girls, to invest in them, and to stand with them by taking action locally,” a news release from the school said.
The event will begin with a rally at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a screening and discussion of the film. The event is free and open to the public. To register, visit https://bit.ly/1hrKHMP.
Scholar program
Trinity High School sophomore Henry Snyder has been accepted to attend the University of Kentucky Rising Scholar Program.
The program “comprises an elite group of sophomore students from Kentucky and the surrounding regions who were chosen to become part of a prestigious group of students,” a news release from the school said. Students were selected based on several factors, including their potential for academic success and demonstration of leadership and service.
The program will be held July 18 at UK.
Journalism honors
- The Assumption High School newspaper, The Rosecall, was selected as grand champion by the Kentucky High School Journalism Association. The Rosecall staff also received first place in general excellence as well as overall newspaper design.
The Rosecall staff also earned individual top honors. Senior Johanna Butler won first and second place in newswriting, first place in newspaper photography, and second and third place in page one design. Shelby Bruce, a senior, received first place in feature writing and second place in single page layout. Senior Mary Dallas earned first place in editorial writing. Eliza Hill, a senior, won first and second place in advertising, while senior Katie Holston received first and third place in single page layout and second place in feature writing. Seniors Alyssa Foster and Lauren Tutwiler earned first and second place in two-page layout. Jessie Thornton, senior, won first place in illustrations and graphics, and Lizzy Truscott earned second place in illustration and graphics. Senior Maura Partridge received second place awards in editorial writing and review writing. Hollie Collins, a senior, won second place in editorial cartoon and senior Carolyn Simon, received second place in newspaper photography. - Trinity High School 2014 alumnus Jake Smith won a $500 scholarship from the Louisville Society of Professional Journalists chapter. Smith and his parents will attend Louisville Society of Professional Journalists annual metro awards dinner on June 19.
Leader seminar
Edo Ighodaro and Ella Kostecki, both students at Assumption High School, recently attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar held at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. along with other high school seniors from around the state. At the end of the seminar, student participants (known as HOBY Ambassadors) are challenged to serve at least 100 volunteer hours in their communities.
