Governor’s Scholars
Forty-six students from schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville have been selected to participate in the Governor’s Scholars Program.
The Governor’s Scholars Program is a five-week residential summer program for outstanding Kentucky high school students. According to a news release from the program, this concentrated academic and personal growth experience is for students who have demonstrated exceptional intellectual potential, high academic achievement and creative ability.
The following students were selected.
- Assumption High School: Kristen Keifer, Margaret Lambe, Regina Passanisi, Erin Raque, Katherine Reilly and Alissia Spence.
- Bethlehm High School: Adam Carrithers, Lesley Downs, Jonathan Smith and Colton Stinger.
- DeSales High School: William Schurfranz.
- Holy Cross High School: Emily Thomson.
- Mercy Academy: Hannah Bewley, Taylor Clark, Kaitlin Henning, Savannah Molyneaux, Sarah Parr and Mary Robinson.
- Presentation Academy: Amelia Kolb.
- Sacred Heart Academy: Samantha Cawthon, Sydney Flynn, Darcy Gleeson, Sarah Hammond, Hannah Hardy, Kayla Mattingly, Hanna Pfeiffer and Clare Schrodt.
- St. Xavier High School: Lucas Baker, Sehr Faltin, Benjamin Farber, John Raque, Kevin Reilly, Michael Rueff, Patrick Ryan, Michael Sehlinger, Thomas Sullivan, Nicholas Yates and Alexander Young.
- Trinity High School: Luke Archer, John Dyar, Timothy Graven, Nicholas Hoffman, Nathan Larch, Derek Nafziger, Aaron Roseberry and Matthew Thomison.
Mock refugee
Sixth-grade students at St. Athanasius School collected four baskets filled with household items and toiletries for refugee families who have recently arrived through Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services program.
The students also participated in a mock refugee camp at the school on April 17 in order to gain insight into the struggles these families face, a news release from the school said.
Choir honor
The Trinity High School Choir received a “Distinguished” rating at the Kentucky Music Educators’ Association (KMEA) assessment, which was held at the University of Louisville School of Music on March 12. This represents the highest rating that is attainable in the assessment festival, a news release from Trinity said.
Essay winner
Chris Kenney, a junior at Holy Angels Academy, won third place in the Right to Life Educational Foundation of Kentucky 2014 Essay Contest. The title of his essay was “The Choice.” Kenney won $100 for his entry.
FBLA convention
Ten Trinity High School students competed in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Convention at The Galt House Hotel & Suites on March 15. Five of the ten students finished in the top three in their respective events, qualifying for the national conference this summer in Nashville, Tenn.
Ben Baughman finished in third place in business law, Charlie Tancula and Tyler Cissell each placed third in public service announcement and Kyle Quinn and Scott Lee finished second in management decision making.
Easter baskets
Assumption High School students, Shea Thompson, Jenna Cooper, Bayley Brewer and Danielle Head, collected candy, coloring books and new toys for Easter baskets that they assembled and hand delivered to patients at Kosair Children’s Hospital on Easter Sunday.
Awareness event
Three students at Assumption High School — Madison Browning, Katie Meyer and Meryl Wilkinson — hosted an animal abuse awareness event at the Assumption Green on April 18. The teens talked about ways to prevent animal abuse and handed out brochures highlighting ways to help the local Humane Society.
