Food collection

Students at Holy Trinity School and St. Nicholas Academy worked together to collect thousands of canned goods and boxed food items for those in the community who need food assistance.
The donated items were delivered to the Sister Visitor Center at 2235 West Market Street. Another visit scheduled for March 7 will coincide with St. Nicholas Academy’s weekly visit to the Sister Visitor Center where middle school students assist with organizing the food pantry and clothing closets.

Archery champs

The John Paul II Academy archery team won first place in the Region 6 Middle School Division Feb. 7. The team competed against 1,040 participants and had the third highest overall team score of all elementary, middle and high school teams. The team is coached by Brad Hartley.

Playwright award

Hannah Rose Marks, a senior at Assumption High School, was selected to participate in the Actors Theatre’s New Voices Young Playwright Festival. Her ten-minute play “Pieces,” was chosen out of more than 550 entries. Her play will be performed by Actors Theatre April 21 and 22.
The work is part of a project developed through Assumption’s BLOOM Theatre, a branch of the school’s Rose Theatre Company.

Letters of intent

  • Five Trinity High School seniors have signed national letters of intent to play soccer in college on Feb. 12. They are:
  • Jacob Dickerson, Southern Indiana University; Ian Logsdon, St. Catherine University; Ryan Payne, Northern Kentucky University; Kobie Qualah, Northern Kentucky University; Dinho Zwane, Temple University; and Jacob Gantt, Transylvania University.
  • Eight Sacred Heart Academy seniors signed letters of intent Feb. 6. They are:

Emily Myers (field hockey), St. Louis University; Anna Brewer (field hockey), Davidson College; Maddie Latino (field hockey), Indiana University; Brooklyn Bell (field hockey), Centre College; Caroline Wistrom (soccer), Austin Peay State University; Lauren Brewer (soccer), Tennessee Tech University; Elizabeth Klem (soccer), Bellarmine University; and Caitlyn Carroll (cross country), Bellarmine University.

Art awards

Students at Sacred Heart Academy won numerous awards in the Scholastic Art Competition, which was established in 1923 to encourage and recognize student achievement in the creative arts.
Gold Key winners were: Cassidy Allen, Molly Steiner, Emma Kaufman, Lauren McGregor, Megan Lenahan and Taylor Apel. Their art works will be judged at the national level in New York City this spring.
Silver Key winners were: Halle Ratterman, Kaylie Plauche, McKenzie Winbigler and Nicole Dowling.
Gold Key artworks will be on exhibit at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft from February 7 to March 2. Silver Key and Honorable Mention artworks will be on exhibit through March 4 at Gheens Academy.

Merit finalists

Eight St. Xavier High School seniors have been named finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Competition. All eight of St. Xavier’s semi-finalists this year moved into the finalist ranking. They are:
Sam Bibelhauser, Coleman Cox, Paxton Duff, Ben Fultz, Stephen Kinny, Max Mudd, Ian Scott and Freddie Weitendorf

Theater

  • Presentation Academy will present “Snoopy the musical” Feb. 28 and March 1 in the school’s Arts & Athletic Center, located at 900 S. Fourth Street.
    Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students. For more information, call 583-5935.
  • For their spring musical Trinity High School will present “Good News.” The performances will be March 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and matinees on March 9, 15 and 16 at 2 p.m. in the Trinity Auditorium on Sherrin Avenue.
    Tickets for adults are $10 and $8 for seniors and students.
  • Holy Trinity School will present “Alice in Wonderland” Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Performances will be at Sacred Heart’s Ursuline Arts Center, 3113 Lexington Road. Tickets can be purchased at the school office or at the door before performances. All tickets are $5
