Remote learning
Two second-grade students at St. Patrick School have utilized technology to stay connected to the Eastwood school while traveling with their mother.
Cohen and Griffin Scribner traveled to the U.S. Virgin Islands where there mother is currently working. They remotely connect to their classroom at St. Patrick via the Internet. They even “attend” the school’s rosary club each Monday.
The twins have also shared experiences with their classmates back in Louisville. They have explained details about the different habit, climate, vegetation and natural resources found in the Virgin Islands.
Player of the year
Alexa Filley, a senior at Assumption High School, has been named the 2013-14 Gatorade Kentucky Volleyball Player of the Year. Filley is the eleventh Assumption student to win the award.
The award not only recognizes “outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field,” a news release from the Gatorade Company said.
Debate team
Trinity High School’s speech and debate team competed at the Wilson Wyatt Debate League Tournament at Waggener High School on Nov. 23.
Claiming top honors for the Shamrocks were sophomore Jorge Rojas-Ortega, who was the third-best speaker in the varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and senior John Moremen, who finished second in the varsity Public Forum Debate.
The team is coached by Amy Zuccaro.
Flaget scholar
Trinity High School sophomore Nick Washle was chosen as the recipient of the annual Flaget Scholarship essay contest. He will receive a $1,500 scholarship to help with his Trinity tuition.
All-American
Larry Harper, a freshman at Trinity High School, was honored at an awards ceremony Dec. 11 for being named an All-American freshman football player by the FBUA. Harper plays quarterback for Trinity’s freshman football team.
Harper will play in a game immediately following the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas, in January.
KYA honors
Holy Trinity School participated in their first Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA). At the event, they presented a bill for Kentucky cities to have the right to vote on a local sales tax option. This bill is similar the LIFT idea presented locally by Mayor Greg Fischer.
Prior to the youth assembly, the KYA delegates attended a LIFT presentation and met Fischer as part of their research and preparation.
In their first year participating, the Holy Trinity delegation was named a Delegation of Excellence and one student member was presented with an Outstanding Delegate Award.
State jazz band
Zachary Anderson, a junior at St. Xavier High School, was named to the All State Jazz Band. Anderson was one of only two chosen for guitar spots in the group. He will perform at a concert in February as part of the annual Kentucky Music Educators’ Association Conference.
Tennis award
Tommy McConville, a sophomore at Trinity High School, was awarded the Kentucky-United States Tennis Association (KY-USTA) Mark Ragland Boys Sportsmanship Award of the Year for 2013. The award was presented during the annual KY-USTA banquet, which was held at the Galt House Hotel & Suites in October.
Eagle Scout
John Patrick “Jack” Kirwan, a freshman at St. Xavier High School, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Kirwan renovated a playground at the Church of the Epiphany in Anchorage, Ky., Kirwan is a member of Troop 380 at St. Patrick Church.
