32nd Kwanzaa celebration begins Dec. 30

The Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry (OMM) will host the 32nd annual “Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration” Dec. 30.

The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1545 Louis Coleman Jr. Drive. The keynote speaker will be Father Christopher S. Rhodes.

Kwanzaa, which means “first fruits of the harvest” in the African language Kiswahili, is a seven-day harvest festival that is celebrated from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. It is a celebration of family, community and culture — it is not a religious holiday.

Kwanzaa was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor of African studies at California State University-Long Beach.

The Dec. 30 event will feature music, prayer, African drumming, food, a celebration of history and much more. For information, call OMM at 636-0296, ext. 1245 or the Catholic Enrichment Center at 776-0262.
