Quick recall

The Catholic Schools Academic League (CSAL) held its season ending fourth- and fifth-grade Quick Recall tournament March 7 at Holy Trinity School.
St. Margaret Mary (black team) defeated St. Albert the Great (gold team) 23-21 in one semi-final match and St. Margaret Mary (red team) defeated Our Lady of Lourdes (white team) 35-5 in the other semi-final match.
In the final match, St. Margaret Mary (black team) defeated St. Margaret Mary (red team) 22-19.
Fifty teams from 29 schools participated in the fourth- and fifth-grade league this season.

Theater

Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Ky., will present “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” March 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. and March 24 at 2 p.m. Performances will be held at the Nelson County Civic Center, 321 S. 3rd Street.

Robotics

The St. Xavier High School’s Tiger Robotics team competed in the third annual Robo Rumble March 9 at Westport Middle School.
Freshman John Bartholomai’s robot “the Xterminator” took first-place honors in the high school division of the Sumo Bot tournament.
Tiger Team Batman, comprised of freshman James Mikulec and sophomore Jack Wichmann, finished third. Juniors Evan Heaton and Luke Esterle finished third in the RCX Robotics Challenge.
Ninety teams participated in the regional robotics competition.

Solo flight

Glen Gnadinger, a senior at St. Xavier High School, recently completed 18 hours of flight instruction and was able to take part in his first solo flight Feb. 9.
Much of Gnadinger’s instruction has been a result of the Harry Joseph Bundschu Memorial Aviation Endowment set up at St. Xavier. Students interested in a career in flying are encouraged to apply for support from the endowment by submitting an essay.

Diversity Week

Presentation Academy seniors Marybeth Webb and Daisha Webster recently coordinated a week-long program at the school called Diversity Week. A news release from the school said the effort educated students “about different cultures and backgrounds while encouraging a tolerant environment.”

All-state team

Zach Flynn, a student at St. Xavier High School, was named to the 2013 Kentucky High School League’s All-state Team.

State champs

St. Xavier High School’s  wrestling team won the KHSAA State Championship in February, defeating Union County and Campbell County. The victory gave the wrestling program its third title overall, and its first title since 2001.
Junior Justin Lampe (145 lbs) and senior Hunter French (160 lbs) each claimed individual titles in their respective weight classes. French also earned the Orville Williams Outstanding Wrestler Award. Four other Tigers (Dominic Lampe, Noah Bauer, Brandon Pledger and Konner Thompson) placed second in their divisions.
Additionally Head Coach Jim Kraeszig was named Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Honor choir

Jackson Keadle, a freshman at St. Xavier High School, was selected to the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Honor Choir. He and the other Honor Choir Singers will perform March 16 in Dallas, Texas, as part of the ACDA National Conference.

Future leaders

Twelve Trinity High School students earned first place honors in five categories at the Region 3 Future Business Leaders of America conference March 18. Trinity qualified for the state competition in seven events with 14 individual qualifiers.
