Geographic Bee

Alexander C. Johnson, a student at Notre Dame Academy, has qualified to compete in the state level of the National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek.

The state bee will be held April 5 on the campus of Western Kentucky University.

One winner from each state and territory will advance to the national competition, which will be held May 20 to 22 in Washington, D.C. The final round of the 2013 National Geographic Bee, moderated by Alex Trebek, will air on the National Geographic Channel May 23.

Playwrights

Five Trinity High School students have received Special Recognition Awards from Actors Theatre of Louisville in the 2013 New Voices Young Playwrights Contest. The Trinity students entered their one-act plays in the competition as part of a creative writing class taught by Gary Owens.

Special Recognition went to the plays “It Takes One,” by Trevor Mason, “The Wreck,” by John Mankowski, “Chase Your Dreams,” by Gavan Baker, “Revenge of the Miss,” by Michael Dant and “Over the Ladder,” by Tyler Gobb.

Writing  contest

Three students from St. Raphael School have won first-place awards in the Young Authors 2013 Regional Competition.

Emily Slaven, a fifth-grader, won for her illustrated story “Down by the Sea.” Jack Ernstberger, also a fifth-grader, won for his poem “The Line Stops Here.” And, Ellie Crawford, a sixth-grade student, was honored for her non-illustrated story “Queen of Bajello.”

Bridge contest

  • Trinity High School sophomore David Merdian, a member of Trinity’s Engineering Club, earned top honors among high school competitors for his construction of a balsa bridge at the annual University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering Expo March 2.
  • Four students from St. Nicholas Academy also won a first-place prize in the engineering contest. Andrew Fowler, Murphy Kindoll, Drew Melcher and Chase Kelly won first place in bridge design efficiency.

Theater

Sacred Heart School for the Arts will present “Charlotte’s Web” March 22 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and March 23 at 2 p.m. All shows will be in the Ursuline Arts Center, building 5 on the Ursuline Campus, 3105 Lexington Road. Tickets for the March 22 morning performance are $4. Tickets for the other two performances are $5 for students and seniors and $8 for adults. Tickets can be purchased online at www.showtix4u.com. Rotary award

Trinity High School senior Nolyn Steffey has been selected to receive the “Unsung Hero” Award, a Rotary Club of Louisville A.B. Sawyer Youth Recognition honor.
Steffey will be honored at a luncheon March 21 at the Galt House Hotel & Suites.

Video contest

Trinity High School broadcast journalism student Jonathan Dunn received two awards at the REEL ACTION Video Contest Premiere & Awards Ceremony held Feb. 23 at the Baxter Avenue Theatres. The REEL ACTION Prevention of Underage Drinking project and contest challenged teens to create a 30-second public service announcement to reduce underage drinking.
Dunn’s video, “The Same Old Story,” finished in first place in the Best Script category. Dunn and Sacred Heart Academy junior Amanda Edelen’s video, “Don’t Become a Story,” finished second in the Best Cinematography category.

Grant

Assumption High School received a grant from State Farm Insurance, part of a program to keep teens safe on the roads. The $2,500 grant will enhance Assumption’s Peer Leader Program and help educate teens on safe driving. The grant also will be used for a prevention assembly speaker, simulation goggles, peer leader materials, red ribbon week materials and driver’s education courses.
