Essay contest

Winners of the Vocation Essay Contest, sponsored by the Serra Club and the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Vocation Office, were announced last week.

Olivia Harner, a seventh-grader from St. James School in Elizabethtown, Ky., placed first. Her essay on the influence a religious sister had on her life appears on page 5 in this week’s Record.

Kyle Landis, also a seventh-grader at St. James, placed second. And third place went to Sydney Blandford, an eighth-grader at St. Andrew Academy and a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.


School contest

Notre Dame Academy and Assumption High School placed first in the WHAS11 Best of Kentuckiana contest.

Notre Dame, a regional school located off Dixie Highway on Lewiston Drive, was voted best private elementary school in the contest. Assumption High School, located at Bardstown Road and Tyler Lane, was voted best private high school.

 

Cross country

Holy Cross High School senior Jacob Thomson was named the 2012 Gatorade Kentucky Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Thomson is a two-time Class A state champion and finished fifth at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships this past season.

Thomson also has maintained a 3.7 grade point average at Holy Cross.

 

Art contest

Trinity High School students took first place in four categories of the St. Matthews Woman’s Club Art Contest. Junior Cody Swabek won in painting, senior Brian Nietoin won in printmaking, junior Mitchell Smit was first in watercolor and senior Bryan Oberhausen won in photography. They advance to the state competition.


Writing contest

Trinity High School sophomore Eric Schoen placed second in the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual Art & Writing Contest.


Eagle Scouts

Zach Baugher of Trinity High School and Geoffrey Bohn of St. Xavier High School have been named Eagle Scouts.

Baugher is a member of Troop 42 at St. Raphael Church. His Eagle Scout project was constructing portable bike racks for area parks.

Bohn is a member of Troop 243 at St. Barnabas Church. His leadership project involved creating a directory for River Valley Cemetery for the homeless and indigent.
