Art contest
Students who attend schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville were among those recognized at the Kentucky Derby Festival Student Art Contest awards ceremony held March 31.
- In the kindergarten and first-grade division, Kailey Stolte of St. Francis of Assisi School placed second and Payton Wilson of St. Nicholas Academy placed third.
- In the sixth- through eighth-grade division, Leigh-anne Lyvers of St. Gregory School in Samuels, Ky., won first place and Reagon Geary, also of St. Gregory, placed second.
Honor choir
Charles “Abel” Sgro, a sixth-grader at Kammerer Middle School and a parishioner of the Church of the Epiphany, was selected to participate in the American Choral Directors Association national honor choir. The choir recently performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Sgro is an honor roll student and also participates in cross country, lacrosse, Walden Theatre and Kharacters for Kids, a group of performers who perform for special needs students.
Spring theater
- St. Margaret Mary School will present “Shrek the Musical, Jr.” April 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., April 24 at 6 p.m. and April 26 at 2 p.m.
Performances will be at the school, 7813 Shelbyville Road. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors if purchased at showtix4u.com. Tickets at the door are $12 for adults and $9 for students and seniors. - Assumption High School’s Rose Theatre Company will present “The Importance of Being Earnest” April 23 and 25 at 7 p.m. and April 25 and 26 at 1 p.m.

National champ
Tyler Frankrone, a junior at Trinty High School, won the 2015 NHSCA Junior National Tournament (182-pound weight class) held in Virginia Beach, Va., March 27. Frankrone also was named the individual state champion at the 2015 KHSAA State Wrestling Championships in his weight class.
Swim scholars
Six members of the St. Xavier High School state champion swimming and diving team were selected for the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) All America Team. They are: Zach Carrico, Eric Finn, Trey Hubbuch, George McCracken, Michael Rueff and Nick Yates. To earn Academic All-American status, an athlete must be a senior and have earned a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) for seven semesters, a news release from the school said.
The St. X team earned a silver award for having an average GPA of 3.679.
Rice bowl
St. Athanasius School raised $2,974.13 for the CRS Rice Bowl Lenten program to benefit Catholic Relief Services.
