State swim titles
Sacred Heart Academy and St. Xavier High School won the KHSAA swimming and diving state championship held at the University of Louisville’s Ralph Wright Natatorium Feb. 28.
- This was the third consecutive state title for Sacred Heart. Tonner DeBeer, Kennedy Lohman, Asia Seidt and Brooke Bauer won the 200 medley relay with a record time of 1:40.74. A record was also set in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.46 by Bauer, Lohman, Leah Stevens and Molly O’Hara. Bauer, DeBeer, Stevens and Seidt also won the 400 relay in 3:24.36.
Lohman set a record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.23, beating her own record of 1:01.29 set last year. Other individual winners were Brooke Forde (200 individual medley), Erin Duffey (diving), Stevens (500 freestyle) and Seidt (100 backstroke).
- St. X’s swimming and diving team won the school’s 27th straight state championship. This title extends the program’s national record, which is 51 championships overall. The achievement also caps off the program’s fifth consecutive undefeated season with a 74-0 record.
First team All-State honors were awarded to Heyward Harrison and Keefer Barnum. The 200 relay medley team of Barnum, Harrison, Matthew McDermott and JD Mundt set a new state record with a time of 1:32.93.
Harrison, Barnum, Trey Hubbuch, Clayton Forde, George McCracken, Michael Miller, Mundt, McDermott and Trent Schulten achieved All-American status.
Prayer wall
A prayer wall — consisting of post-it notes placed on a large bulletin board — has been erected at St. Athanasius School.
Students, staff, parishioners and visitors are invited to place prayer intentions on the wall which reads: “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith,” Matt. 21:22.
The idea for the prayer wall was born out of one of the core values of the school “Growing in Spirit,” Margie Reece, principal of St. Athanasius, said.
The intentions are remembered at the school Mass held each Wednesday.
Reading day
Students from St. Michael School participated in the 17th annual National Education Association’s Read Across America Day on March 2 with a variety of activities.
Students in kindergarten through eighth-grade took part in a character parade, in which students and staff were encouraged to dress as their favorite book characters and parade through the school with the corresponding book.
Special guests, including, Miss Kentucky Katie George; state Senator Julie Raque Adams; Father Richard Sullivan; Olivia Henken from “The Voice” TV show; WLKY’s Lexy Sheen; and Bellarmine University basketball coach Scotty Davenport also visited classrooms to read to students.
Theater
- Trinity High School’s department of theater arts will present the musical “Lucky Stiff” March 12, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. and March 15 and 22 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. All performances will be held at the Trinity Auditorium, 115 N. Sherrin Avenue. - St. Xavier High School’s drama department will present “Grease” on March 20, 21, 26 and 28 at 7 p.m. and March 22 and 28 at 2 p.m.

For more information, call Mike Reynolds at 637-4712, ext. 599. - Thirty-four students, ages 8 to 10 from 11 area schools will perform in Sacred Heart School for the Arts’ production of “Anne of Green Gables” March 20 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and March 21 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
All performances will be in the Ursuline Arts Center, building #5, on the Ursuline campus, 3105 Lexington Road.

Easter bunny visit
St. Catherine Academy in New Haven, Ky., will host a breakfast with the Easter Bunny March 28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the school cafeteria. There will be doughnuts, drinks, crafts and an opportunity for photos with the Easter Bunny. Tickets are not required but donations will be accepted.
Eagle Scout
William Paris, a senior at Trinity High School, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Paris is a member of Troop 109 at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church.
For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Paris and a team of volunteers built a cellar cover at the Just Enough House, a clothing and food ministry at Cable Baptist Church.
Future engineer
Andrew Lynn, a junior at Trinity High School, has been accepted to Purdue University’s 2015 Seminar for Top Engineering Prospects summer program. Teacher recommendations and Lynn’s ACT score helped him earn a spot in the program, a news release from the school said.
