Philanthropy award
Anna-Maria Beck, a sophomore at Sacred Heart Academy, was named an Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy by the Louisville chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in November. This award recognizes an individual age 5 to 17 who demonstrates “outstanding commitment to the Greater Louisville/Southern Indiana community through philanthropic efforts,” a news release from the school said.
Beck was diagnosed in 2007 with a life-threatening condition where fluid collects in the brain. She has had 12 brain surgeries, six rounds of chemotherapy and endured six weeks of proton radiation. Despite her setbacks, Beck has spent considerable amounts of time helping others by raising money for the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Clinic at the University of Louisville, serving as a “pen pal mentor” to other cancer patients and volunteering at Gilda’s Club, the release said.
Last year she held a leadership role — alongside a committee of adults — to raise a record $381,000 at the Bourbon & Bowties event to support Kosair Children’s Hospital.
Holiday concert
Trinity High School will hold Christmas concerts Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. in the Trinity Auditorium on Sherrin Avenue. Trinity’s Handbell Choir, Jazz Band and Trinity Singers will perform seasonal favorites, a news release from the school said. The concerts are free and open to the public.
Best Buddies
Harper Gray, a junior at Sacred Heart Academy, was named Champion of the Year by Best Buddies Kentucky, an organization that “creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” a news release from the school said.
Harper founded Sacred Heart’s Best Buddies Club and plans events with students and their “best buddies.” She raised more than $10,000 as well as awareness for Best Buddies Kentucky.
Champion of the Year nominees are selected based on their professional and philanthropic achievements, the release said.
KYA honors
Trinity High School senior Nathan Larch earned an Outstanding Speaker Award for the second consecutive year at the Kentucky Youth Assembly held in Louisville Nov. 29.
Thirty-two Trinity students participated in debates in the Senate and House chambers of the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort.
Miss Field Hockey
Bailey Higgins, a senior at Assumption High School, has been named Miss Field Hockey by the Kentucky Field Hockey Coaches Association. Higgins was captain of the field hockey team as they earned their second consecutive state title. She also earned MVP honors at the 2014 state tournament.
Higgins has signed to play field hockey for Michigan State University.
Mr. Soccer
Sam Stockton, a senior at Trinity High School, has been named 2014 Kentucky “Mr. Soccer.”
Stockton, a four-year varsity starter, lead the Shamrocks with 14 goals during the 2014 season.
He also made 20 assists. Stockton was named to the All-District, All-Region and All-State teams, and was the Kentucky Player of the Year.
He will represent Trinity in the annual All-American match that will be played in Cary, N.C., in conjunction with the NCAA
College Cup, on Dec. 13.
Stockton has committed to play soccer at Indiana University.
Rosary Club
The Rosary Club from St. Patrick Church brought hand-made rosaries to families who have babies in the Kosair Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
About 45 children and their parents took part in the presentation, which was held Dec. 8. Also attending the event was Dr. Michael Bratcher, principal of St. Patrick School.
