Chorus pilgrimage

The St. Xavier High School Tiger Chorus is taking part in a choir pilgrimage to Italy, Austria and Germany.

The 11-day tour, led by German teacher and choir director Rick Knoop, departed from Louisville June 4. The Tiger Chorus sang for a papal audience on June 6 and will serve as the principal choir at the Festival Mass of Corpus Christi today, June 7, at St. Peter’s Basilica.

The choir will proceed to Assisi and Venice, where they will sing in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and at the Cathedral Basilica of San Marco in Venice.

The group will continue their pilgrimage by traveling across the southern Alpine chain of the Karawanken Mountains to the southern town of Klagenfurt, Austria, where they will sing in the 13th-century historical church of St. Egid.

This choral ensemble of 14 singers, accompanied by 16 family members and friends, will conclude their journey in Munich, Germany. The chorus will return to Louisville June 14.

Leadership forum

Emily Kosse, a junior at Sacred Heart Academy, is one of 50 high school girls selected to participate in the inaugural ANNpower Leadership Forum June 4 to 7 in Washington, D.C. While at the leadership forum, the participants will be mentored by female CEOs and leaders from the United States and around the world. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn grants to start their own leadership projects back home. Kosse has expressed an interest in helping under-privileged families learn to make home-cooked, healthy meals.

Journalism awards

The Rosecall, the Assumption High School student newspaper, and nine staff members recently received the following awards in the American Scholastic Press Association National Contest — newspaper division. The Rosecall won first place and Alyssa Johnson also placed first for editorial writing in the newspaper division.

In the 2011-2012 Kentucky High School Journalism Association Contest — newspaper division, Katie George won second place in newswriting; Taylor Long placed second in feature writing; Maggie Lane (first place), Alyssa Johnson (second place) and Olivia Reibel (third place) swept the editorial writing category; Katie George placed first in review writing; Lizi Kuhl took first and second in sports writing.

Jessica Sizemore placed first in newspaper photography; Megan McClelland won first and second place in advertising; Claire McCormick placed first in editorial cartooning; Katie George placed first and Taylor Long came in second in single page layout; Katie George won first and second place in page one design; Claire McCormick placed first and Maggie Lane placed second in two-page layout; Claire McCormick placed first and Maggie Lane came in third in illustrations/graphics; and the Rosecall staff won first place for overall newspaper design.
