Holy Cross students host second ‘Great Day of Service’ on Sept. 24

Holy Cross High School hosted its 2nd annual “Great Day of Service” on Sept. 24. More than 250 students and 24 staff members gave a day of service to eight local non-profit organizations — their efforts provided more than 1,700 hours of service.

Students and staff served at the Society of St. Vincent dePaul, the Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Catholic Charities Refugee Ministries, the Seven Counties Services nursing facility, the Volunteers of America and the Animal House.

They completed tasks such as working in agricultural programs at Catholic Charities, training animals at Metro Animal Services, and packing medical supplies to be shipped overseas for Supplies Over Seas.

Awareness event

Erika Lowry, an eighth-grader at St. Raphael School, has started a campaign to stop road rage called “Kids Against Road Rage.” Her goal is “to get a sticker on every car as a reminder that road rage needs to end,” a news release from the school said.

Erika and other volunteers recently handed out “STOP ROAD RAGE” bumper stickers to cars in the car-rider line at her school. For more information or to get a free bumper sticker, contact Erika at KidsAgainstRoadRage@gmail.com.

State government

Abby Moore, a senior at Bethlehem High School, was elected lieutenant governor at the Kentucky Girls State program held in June at the University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, Ky.

The program, which was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, provides interactive training in the governmental process, according to the program’s website.

Magazine feature

Mercy Academy was a featured school in the September issue of US Catholic Magazine. The magazine published an article on teen body image titled “Selfie Esteem.”

Amy Elstone, Mercy’s principal, was interviewed about an advertising campaign the school developed which has received national attention. The campaign centered around a message of empowerment for young women.

‘Chair of Honor’

A “Chair of Honor” was dedicated Sept. 19 at Trinity High School’s Marshall Stadium prior to the Shamrock’s home football game in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, which was Sept. 19. The POW/MIA Chair of Honor is a “seat symbolically reserved for all American military service persons from past wars and conflicts that are still held prisoner or remain missing,” a news release from the school said. The seat is to remain perpetually vacant at Marshall Stadium in their honor.

Family members of William Milliner, a 1968 Trinity graduate, were honored guests for the dedication. U.S. Army CW3 Milliner was shot down over Laos during the war with Vietnam on March 6, 1971, and is still unaccounted for, the release said.

Science fair

Two students at St. Francis of Assisi School were selected as semi-finalists in the Broadcom Masters national science fair. Analisa Conway and Joshua Jacob, both eighth-graders, were among 300 students chosen from a group of 2,000 science fair submissions.

Conway’s project was called “Exploring Vinyl Flooring Cytotoxicity” and Jacob’s was titled “A Novel Reaction to Recycle Glycerol Waste.”

Virtual field trip

Students from Presentation Academy will soon attend a virtual field trip via live streaming at the upcoming IdeaFestival Water Conference, part of the local IdeaFestival.

Presentation students will join those from Ivy Tech Community college and two colleges in Costa Rica to take part in a “cross-disciplinary educational experience, touching on topics that involve science, technology, philanthropy and compassion,” a news release from the school said.

According to the release, students will also have the opportunity to tweet questions for real-time responses and interaction from a panel of water experts.
