Essay contest
The Serra Club of Louisville and the Archdiocese of Louisville Vocation Office have announced the theme of this year’s Vocation Essay Contest. It will be “Bringing Christ to Others.”
Participants may select one of the three following questions as the essay topic:
-How is following a religious vocation a courageous and radical act?
-What is your understanding of a priest, deacon or religious brother or sister today?
-What does it take to give your whole life to Christ?
The contest is open to all students in grades 4 to 8 who attend a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Louisville or who are participating in religious education or youth ministry. Religion teachers, catechists and youth ministers at each parish or school may serve as a sponsor for each student who submits an essay. Sponsors should review the student’s essay before submission to ensure that it meets essay guidelines, a news release from the Vocation Office said.
Essays should be between 100 and 300 words in length and should be typed in a standard black typeface and double spaced. Each student may submit one essay.
The Vocation Essay Contest begins Oct. 1 and ends Oct. 31. Winners will be announced by Nov. 21.
The winning essay from each grade division will be awarded a certificate and $100. Certificates will be awarded to the second and third place essays in each grade division. The winner in each grade division along with his or her parents will be invited to a Serra Club luncheon at the University Club Dec. 15.

School honor
Presentation Academy has been designated by Louisville Metro Mayor Greg Fischer’s office a School of Compassion. The goal of the city-wide compassion project is “to inspire youth to come up with ideas, projects and activities that will raise their awareness to the importance of helping others,” a news release from the mayor’s office said.
The school’s distinction was recognized at the opening school liturgy on Aug. 15.
Fall theater
St. Xavier High School’s drama department will present “Harvey,” Sept. 24, 25, 27 and Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
All performances will be held in the school’s Brown-Forman Cultural Arts Center, 1609 Poplar Level Road.

Living rosary
The 63rd annual “Living Rosary Procession” will be held Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. at Assumption High School, 2170 Tyler Lane.
Children in grades one to 12 are encouraged to take part in the procession. There will be one practice session for children. It will be held at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at Assumption.

Tea time
Trinity High School invites mothers of eighth-graders for a prospective parent event. This is an opportunity to ask questions, tour the school and hear from current Shamrock Moms and school officials while enjoying coffee and tea, a news release from the school said.
The school will host Tea Times on the following mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.: Sept. 24, Oct. 15, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5.

School award
Holy Angels Academy was recognized by the Catholic Education Honor Roll as a 2014 School of Excellence by The Cardinal Newman Society.
Honor Roll schools “are marked by the integration of Catholic identity throughout all aspects of their programs and excellence in academics,” a news release from the society said.
This year 71 schools in the U.S. were named Schools of Excellence, and an additional nine received the distinction of Honorable Mention, which is less than five percent of the Catholic high schools in the U.S.
