Voters urged to contact lawmakers to help abolish the death penalty

For the first time since 1976, a bill to abolish the death penalty in Kentucky is set to be heard in committee by Kentucky representatives.

The Catholic Conference of Kentucky (CCK) is calling on Catholics to contact members of the Kentucky House judiciary committee and encourage them to vote yes on the measure, known as House Bill 203. The hearing for the bipartisan bill is set for March 9.

“We need 10 votes in the committee to move HB 203 to the floor of the House for a full debate and vote,” a Feb. 23 announcement from the CCK said. “Your help is needed to secure these 10 votes.”

The CCK is the public policy arm of Kentucky’s four bishops, including Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz. Its announcement tells voters to call 800-372-7181 and ask the operator to deliver your message to all members of the House judiciary committee.
