Ursuline Sister of Louisville Mary Terence Schmitt, an educator, dies at 96

OSU-obituaries-wUrsuline Sister of Louisville Mary Terence Schmitt died Nov. 16 at Sacred Heart Home. She was 96.

Sister Schmitt, a native of Dalton, Neb., entered religious life in 1938. She served as an educator in Kentucky, Nebraska, Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

In Kentucky, she taught at Our Mother of Sorrows and St. George schools in the 1940s. She taught at Ursuline Academy from 1947 to 1961.

Sister Schmitt was an environmental activist and, in the early 2000s, she took part in protests in Frankfort, Ky., against strip mining.

She is survived by two sisters, Lucille Cuminiskey of Worthington, Ohio, and Clara Collet of Lafayette, La.; a brother Vincent Schmitt of Sidney, Neb., nieces, nephews and members of her religious community.

Visitation will be Nov. 20 at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery.
