Ursuline Sister Georgine Grabenstein, an educator, dies

OSU-obituaries-wUrsuline Sister of Louisville Georgine Grabenstein died June 2 at Nazareth Home – Clifton. She was 99 and in her 79th year of religious life.

Sister Grabenstein, a native of Cumberland, Md., served as an educator in Kentucky, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland.

In Kentucky, she taught served as principal at St. Francis of Assisi School. She taught at St. Elizabeth, St. George, Holy Spirit, St. Rita, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. and St. John Vianney schools. Sister Grabenstein also served as a teacher at Sacred Heart and at Angela Merici High School, now Holy Cross High School.

Sister Grabenstein served as pastoral associate at St. Leonard Church from 1984-1990 and at St. Martin of Tours Church from 1996-2005. She was a teacher’s aide at St. Joseph School. From 2005 up till 2011, she volunteered at the St. Matthews Area Ministries and Respect Life Office.

Sister Grabenstein is survived by several nieces and nephews and members of her religious community.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 6 at the Ursuline Motherhouse chapel. Burial followed in St. Michael Cemetery.
