Students win ‘Horsing Around with Art’ awards

Catholic school students were among winners in the Kentucky Derby Museum’s 33rd annual “Horsing Around with Art” contest.

Overall, McKayla Rakestraw, a junior at Mercy Academy, was the Grand Prize Winner. St. Bernard School eighth-grader Evan Bockelman won the “Winston Memorial” Award.

Mercy junior Kendra Yurt won the “WinStar” Award and St. Agnes School seventh-grader Anna Krebs won the “Outriders Society” Award.

The “Millinery Fashion” Award was given to Lucy Klein, a seventh-grader at St. Agnes, Lindsey Kramer, an eighth-grader at St. Bernard and Matilda Reinhart, a fourth-grader at St. Francis of Assisi School.

In the middle school division, Elizabeth Smalley, an eighth-grader from St. Patrick School placed second.

Allison Rogers, a seventh-grader at St. Agnes School, won the sculpture award in the middle school division.

The competition is open to students in first through 12th grades. The entries are on exhibit in the Kentucky Derby Museum’s Matt Winn Gallery through Feb. 17. The winners were recognized at a ceremony on Feb. 12.
