St. William nurse honored by Norton Church and Health Ministries

Norton Healthcare’s Office of Church and Health Ministries awarded Virginia Bush its 2016 Church and Health Ministries Nurse of the Year Award. She was recognized on May 16 during a ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Bush, who is a registered nurse, serves on the health ministry team at St. William Church, located in West Louisville near 12th and Oak Streets. She was nominated for the award by St. William parishioners and staff, who describe her as “a light in our parish.”

“We are a small church in one of the poorest zip codes in Louisville,” the nomination notes. “We are surrounded by a chemical plant, and our neighborhood encompasses public housing, chemically poisoned brown fields, at least 15 transitional housing facilities, a women’s prison/drug treatment program and thousands of people who live west of the 9th Street Divide.”

The health ministry team at St. William offers educational presentations for groups in the community, blood pressure clinics and aids individuals one-on-one.

“Ms. Bush has inspired a network of people to take new steps to improve the health of our neighbors and neighborhood,” the nomination concluded. “She embodies the integration of spirituality and compassion that call forth our best selves.”
