St. Leonard School has created a girls’ STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) club called The Wolverettes’ Makers Club. It’s composed of 20 girls in third through eighth grades.

The club was made possible by a grant from Kentucky Girls STEM Collaborative, an organization whose goal is “to strengthen Kentucky’s capacity to increase the number of women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” according to its website.

A matching grant from a local engineering company also helped form the group.

At its first meeting the club members learned from a Kentucky Science Center staff member how to solder and make pins and badges using various tools.
