The Society of St. Vincent de Paul held its Fifth Annual Friends of the Poor Walk Oct. 14 at Churchill Downs, and despite threatening weather, drew hundreds of participants — from toddlers on tricycles to senior citizens.

The event raised more than $30,000 to aid the efforts of the St. Vincent de Paul society and its 47 parish-based conferences throughout the Archdiocese of Louisville.

According to a news release from the society, all proceeds from the Friends of the Poor Walk go toward providing temporary, emergency financial assistance for families in need of help to make mortgage or rent payments, or to keep their utilities from being disconnected.
