Sister Smith, an educator and musician, dies at 87

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Marie Smith, 87, died on Jan. 23 at Nazareth, Ky. She was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 67 years.

Sister Smith, a native of Deer Lodge, Mont., served as a grade school teacher and choir director at Sacred Heart, St. Brigid and Holy Name schools in Louisville. She served as principal, teacher and choir director at the old St. Vincent de Paul School in New Hope, Ky. She assisted in the Learning Center at Spalding College and taught at the Nelson County Jail.

She served as organist for liturgies at St. James Church in Elizabethtown, Ky., and at St. Francis Xavier Church in Mt. Washington, Ky.

She served the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth as a musician and chaplain at Russell Hall and the Motherhouse on the Nazareth, Ky., campus and at Nazareth Home in Louisville.

She is survived by her siblings, Robert Smith of Champaign, Ill.; John E. Cissell of Bardstown, Ky.; Louise Simpson of Cox’s Creek, Ky.; Theresa Ayers of Miami, Fla.; and Margie Collins of Columbus, Ohio; and by her religious community.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 29 at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth, Ky., followed by burial in Nazareth Cemetery.
