Sister of Charity of Nazareth Katharine “Kitty” Hanrahan dies at 94

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Katharine “Kitty” Hanrahan died December 17 at Nazareth Home. She was 94 and in her 71st year of religious life.

Sister Hanrahan, a native of Louisville, Ky., served in education, pastoral and hospital ministry in Kentucky and Virginia.

In Kentucky, Sister Hanrahan taught music at various elementary schools in Kentucky from 1947-1966. She served as pastoral associate in Richmond, Va. From 1970-1979. She also served for two years at St. Bernard Church in Louisville as pastoral associate. Sister Hanrahan later served in hospital ministry at the Catherine Spalding Retreat Center in Nazareth from 1998-2007.

She served her religious community as the director of junior professed from 1966-1970 and as Provincial for the Louisville area.

Sister Hanrahan is survived by her niece Patricia Cooper Cason of West Chester, Ohio, her extended family and members of her religious community.

A wake will be held Dec. 26 at 1:30 p.m. at Nazareth Home’s Our Lady of Nazareth Chapel and at 6:30 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Nazareth.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Dec. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Nazareth. Burial will follow in Nazareth Cemetery.
