Sister of Charity Lucille Phipps, an educator, dies at 86

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Lucille Phipps died July 10 at Nazareth Home. She was 86 and in her 65th year of religious life.

Sister Phipps, born in Fancy Farm, Ky., served as an educator in Kentucky and Massachusetts. In Kentucky, Sister Phipps taught at St. Joseph School in Bardstown and St. Agnes School in Louisville.

In 1965 Sister Phipps was chosen by her community as third councilor and secretary for the St. Joseph Province.

Sister Phipps also served in pastoral care ministry at Our Lady of Peace Hospital from 1985 to 1996. She was also interested in wellness, massage therapy and holistic care and served members of her community and others in this ministry from 1996-2012. Sister Phipps also led the Catherine Spalding Retreat Center in Nazareth, Ky., for several years.

She is survived by her sisters Georgia Uyder and Mary Nagel, nieces, nephews and members of her religious community.

Visitation will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 12 at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place July 13 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Vincent Church, followed by burial in Nazareth Cemetery.
