Sister Jean Hettinger, former principal, dies

Ursuline Sister Jean Marie Hettinger, 77, died Nov. 17 at Mercy Sacred Heart in Louisville. She had been a religious since 1953.

Sister Hettinger served on the Ursuline Sisters General Council from 1980 to 1988, and again from 1996 to 2002. She also served at St. Francis of Assisi and Our Mother of Sorrows churches in Louisville, Christ the Healer Church in Edmonton, Ky., and the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Ky. She was a graduate of Ursuline College and held a master of science in education degree from the University of Dayton.

Sister Hettinger taught at Holy Spirit School and served as assistant principal and principal of Sacred Heart Academy. Outside of Kentucky, her ministries included teaching in Maryland and South Carolina and serving parishes in West Virginia and Alabama.

Survivors include a brother Raymond Hettinger, several nieces and nephews and members of the Ursuline Community.

Visitation will be at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road, Nov. 20 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Nov. 21 at the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel. Burial was in St. Michael Cemetery.
