Sister Helen McCarthy dies at 84

Dominican Sister of Peace Helen McCarthy, a native of Woburn, Mass., died on Aug. 31 at the age of 84. She had been a Dominican Sister for 60 years.

Sister McCarthy ministered as a teacher in Illinois, West Virginia and Kentucky. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at Sts. Simon and Jude School and Holy Rosary Academy.

She also served as a pastoral associate and secretary at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and as a pastoral associate at St. Brigid Church.

Sister McCarthy also ministered in several capacities for the former congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine (which merged with six other communities to form the Dominican Sisters of Peace).

She served as administrative assistant for the southern region, assistant treasurer and southern regional coordinator.

Sister McCarthy is survived by her sister-in-law, Helen McCarthy, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 5, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial  will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 6 in the chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse Cemetery.
