SCN Mary Elaine Zehnder, an educator, dies at 87

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Mary Elaine Zehnder died April 10 at Nazareth Home. She was 87 and in her 67th year of religious life.

Sister Zehnder, a native of Louisville, served as pastoral associate of the former St. Pius X Church from 1984 to 2012. St. Pius merged with St. Barnabas in 2015 to form St. John Paul II Church.

She also served as an educator in Kentucky, Massachusetts and Maryland. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Gregory School in Samuels, Ky.

Sister Zehnder also served her religious community as motherhouse coordinator from 1973 to 1977.

She served as director of the SCN Mission Office from 1978 to 1984. And she served as her community’s “associate regional” in the Louisville area from 1996 to 2002.

She is survived by her sister Patrice Rymarowicz, her extended family and members of her community.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated on April 13 at St. Vincent de Paul Church on the motherhouse grounds in Nazareth, Ky. Burial was in Nazareth Cemetery.
